General Description Quartz is the most abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust. It is made up of a lattice of silica (SiO2) tetrahedra. Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a density of 2.65 g/cm³.
Appearance block, sand, or powder
Origins Quartz occurs in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites. Well-formed crystals may reach several meters in length and weigh hundreds of kilograms. These veins may bear precious metals such as gold or silver, and form the quartz ores sought in mining.
Applications Quartz is a hard substance and can transmit ultraviolet light, unlike glass. It does not split easily and is piezoelectric. This means it vibrates a bit when an electric current passes through it. When it is put under pressure, quartz can generate a small electric charge by itself. Apart from quartz gems and jewellery, it is commonly used in the industrial world for various purposes, such as for making special lenses, prisms and quartz-glass tubes for lamps. Quartz is also used in the manufacturing of the tubes, crucibles and glass (which is one of the apparatus used for conducting precise laboratory experiments) which are used in a laboratory. Quartz has diverse applications such as its use in an ordinary glass-manufacturing factory for making glass, as a material used in the construction business and in the foundry industry for making moulds. It is also used as a filter for some liquids, in the manufacturing of sandpaper and whetstones, in the scouring of powders, in sandblasting.
Toxicology Non-toxic (please refer to MSDS)
Important Properties Color is as variable as the spectrum, but clear quartz is by far the most common color followed by white or cloudy (milky quartz). Purple (Amethyst), pink (Rose Quartz), gray or brown to black (Smoky Quartz) are also common. Cryptocrystalline varieties can be multicolored.
Luster is glassy to vitreous as crystals, while cryptocrystalline forms are usually waxy to dull but can be vitreous. Tran***rency: Crystals are tran***r |
